Memories of

Wickhampstead Park

MEMORIES OF WICKHAMPSTEAD PARK was Nick Ashton-Jones’ second novel, written in the 1990s but substantially revised in 2020.

The overheated housing market, the glorious Summer of 1987, just before the crash. An old man has wasted a life in the house his father built in a North London suburb. His neurotic impulsion to find out what the house is worth irrecoverably changes his life, and the lives of his nearest and dearest. The past is dredged up and has to be faced. Adultery, homosexuality and incest but true love is realized when the true self is known and accepted.

Penetrating the facade and uncovering the history of an affluent suburb, we discover endearing humanity, no less damaged than elsewhere. We are all hostages to the past but life is full of possibilities. If we are brave enough to realize them.
